Although the MD4S-2D transaxle is the best buy on the market for cars in the 300 to 500HP range there are many reports of failing main bearings from a variety of builders. This failure is caused by the tremendous side thrust of the transmission main shaft, generated from high performance motors. Such failures usually require a complete transmission overhaul. If you have such a failure it would be wise to consider including the “Funco Fix” to your 2D trans.
Funco got involved with this situation because of the number of cars they build and support. They needed something to help keep their customers happy when using the Mendeola MD4-2D transaxle. So in desperation they engineered a new transmission nose cone they believe is a “fix” to this main bearing situation. This upgrade kit utilizes a Timken tapered roller bearing to add more support to the main shaft. The kit also replaces the standard main-shaft end-nut with a custom nut with milled race that mates to the roller bearing. This new setup applies a slight pressure to the end of the shaft, off-loading the main-bearing from the extreme thrust pressures that can overstress the main-bearing. The result of the kit is a longer life to the main-shaft bearing.
It’s important to know the kit lowers the shift shaft about 3/8″ of an inch and requires a minimal amount of shift linkage adjustment (rotation).
This “Funco Fix” is not for Funco cars only, it’s useful in all MD4S transaxles.
The kit cost is $450.
